I originally intended to paint the Dragon Box alone so I followed up the previous painting with Dragon Box II. I wanted the scale of the box to be close to the first painting, so that determined its overall size. Keeping the light, shadows, and color of the box in uniformity with the prior painting was also important to me. Creating a long gradient from light to dark takes a lot of working and reworking, adding more highlights and lowlights, constantly blending, being patient until you get it just right.
