The farmers market was overflowing with squash this fall and we were eating it all winter. Slicing into the round dark green skin to reveal such bright orange flesh one day it dawned on me that it would make a brilliant painting against my traditional dark background. I had also purchased some very interesting specialty pumpkins that autumn and I grabbed the orange one from my back door and the composition was starting to come together. This painting has a moodiness about it reminiscent of the Dutch painters.
