I wanted to create a multi-object composition with a mix of various textures. Capturing the wood, metal and stone and the way the light reacts on each adds so much interest to the painting.
This antique box, with its serpents and dragons, is very mysterious and dramatic. I have no idea the journey the box has taken to get to me, but the antique dealer I purchased it from believed it was used to store tea. I like to imagine a ceremonial tea service of the past…tea with the emperor perhaps.
