I discovered this 1910 antique bowl through an auction dealer a few years ago. It sits in my living room, the lapis blue and gold catching the light like a precious jewel. When it became clear that painting in a style of contemporary realism came naturally and brought me such pleasure I was free to think about what I wanted to paint and less about how to paint it. I started to look at the things around me as subject matter and this bowl was one of my first works on my new path.
I set up the composition illuminating the bowl with very dramatic theatrical lighting. The contrasts of light and dark are so critical in my work, capturing the highlights and colors. Simple strokes of white for the brightest highlights moving to black as the subject disappears into the shadows. The lighting steers the viewer into the focal point of rich color and detail.
