This beautiful bamboo basket was once used to hold gifts given to a betrothed bride from the groom’s family. The gifts inside were meant to symbolize prosperity and good luck and were often given in pairs to represent the couple and their bond. As history states, the basket was often filled with food items such as dried fruits, nuts and sweets, brandy, and jewelry. There are three detachable round baskets that neatly stack one upon another. I am fascinated, as with most of my subjects, with the journey this piece has made to get to me. I wonder what the bride and groom looked like and if they had a long and prosperous life together? As we know, bamboo will bend but does not break, how appropriate for this lovely tradition.
