Dotted along the shoreline of the Brule River in Northern Wisconsin exist very large log houses built by Native Americans in the 1800s. I have spent all of my summers on the Brule at a log home called Ne Doge e Won. This large old woven basket sits to one side of the large stone fireplace and its warm colors come alive by the light of the fire. The gourd-like shape of this basket is unusual but the designs or patterns were frequently found in baskets made in the Southwest. This particular basket could have been woven to hold or carry food or other items or may have been purely decorative. It has been a part of my life for over 55 years, therefore, it was essential that I someday paint it.
