The Rainbow Katsina represents peace and harmony among the various tribes and is held in high regard by the Hopi and Navajo people.
This katsina doll was carved by artist Tayron Polequaptewa. I was quite captivated by the imposing tableaux adorned with duck feathers on her head. Note also, the cornhusk earrings, symbols on her cheeks, and various pigment colors used to paint this doll. Although the colors are subtle, when I illuminated this katsina the various hues became more pronounced and are reflected in my painting. I appreciate the textures created in Tayron’s distressed carving technique and have enjoyed the challenge of recreating that texture in my paintings.
It has been wonderful to establish my friendship with Tay and to cultivate this working collaboration between two artists.
