I had such fun painting The Food Fixer, one of my first paintings after that trip to Santa Fe. I purchased the mixer at an antique market for one dollar. While the mixer does not have a history within my family, as I worked on it I could not help but wonder what proud farmer’s wife, grandmother, young bride… presented the fruits of their labors to their loved ones. The colors in this composition are all somewhat muted and earthy. Adding a small unexpected shot of color can add so much to a painting. It can draw your audience in even if it is something as simple as the red control switch on the handle.
